Discovering New Horizons: Marcel Hirscher’s Journey of Renewal in New Zealand

Feeling the Pulse of Winter from a World Away

Marcel Hirscher, one of skiing’s all-time greats, is embracing a new chapter on New Zealand's South Island. Amidst the rugged beauty and solitude of this far-flung destination, Hirscher is on a quest not just to perfect his ski setup but to rediscover the joy of the sport that defined his career. His daily routine here is simple yet profound—testing, training, and above all, recharging his spirit.

At the Kirkwood Ski Education Foundation (KSEF), we draw inspiration from athletes like Hirscher. Our mission is to nurture the next generation of skiing legends, guiding our young athletes on a path that could one day lead them to be the next Marcel Hirscher, Mikaela Shiffrin, or Travis Ganong. Just as Hirscher finds renewed passion on the slopes of New Zealand, we aim to cultivate that same dedication and love for the sport in our skiers.

A Morning Routine Rooted in Simplicity

Every morning, Hirscher kicks off his day early, leaving for Roundhill Ski Area by 7 am to hit the slopes by 8. While this may seem like a familiar drill, the atmosphere here—18,500 kilometers from his Austrian homeland—offers a fresh perspective. Reflecting on his decision to train in New Zealand, Hirscher shares, “This journey was the perfect choice. It’s all about creating memories and savoring the moments.” At KSEF, we encourage our athletes to embrace every opportunity to grow, just as Hirscher does.

Back to Basics at Roundhill

At Roundhill, a modest ski area with just two T-bar lifts, Hirscher is focused on one of the most basic slopes. It might seem understated for a champion of his caliber, but that’s precisely the point. “This setup is ideal for where I’m at right now,” he notes. Easing back into the intensity of competitive skiing after a five-year hiatus requires a cautious approach. “I’m hitting some personal bests, but with no one else on the course, it’s hard to measure just how fast I’m really going.” Similarly, our KSEF programs emphasize foundational skills, ensuring our athletes build the strength and technique necessary to compete at the highest levels.

Teamwork and Innovation: A Collaborative Effort

Hirscher’s journey is far from a solo endeavor. Supported by a dedicated team from VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports, the focus in New Zealand is on material development and fine-tuning equipment. “Our priority here is testing. It’s crucial for our athletes and product lines,” explains Hirscher. The team includes coaches and equipment experts, all working in tandem to ensure every detail is just right. At KSEF, we understand the value of teamwork and innovation, instilling these principles in our athletes as they prepare to take on the challenges of competitive skiing.

Finding Inspiration on the Shores of Lake Tekapo

But it’s not just about the technical aspects of the sport. Hirscher finds himself inspired by the breathtaking scenery of Lake Tekapo, with its expansive turquoise waters and towering mountain reflections. “There’s something about this place that feels timeless. I’m learning to take things as they come, without the pressure of planning too far ahead,” he says. These moments of tranquility are a stark contrast to the relentless pace of his past, offering him a new source of motivation. At KSEF, we encourage our athletes to find their own inspiration, whether on the slopes or in the natural beauty that surrounds them.

Looking Ahead: Racing with a New Perspective

As the month draws to a close, Hirscher remains noncommittal about competing in upcoming FIS races at Coronet Peak. While racing is on his radar, he’s more focused on the benefits of his current training regimen. “Right now, training is doing wonders for me—I’d even skip a race for it,” he admits. As for whether he’ll make it to the World Cup opener in Sölden, Hirscher remains grounded: “That’s not even on my mind right now.” This mindset is something we at KSEF strive to instill in our athletes—a focus on growth, training, and the journey, rather than just the destination.
