Exciting Progress at KSEF: Preparing for the 2024/2025 FIS Program

The Kirkwood Ski Education Foundation (KSEF) is abuzz with activity as we prepare for the upcoming 2024/2025 season. Our dedicated FIS Committee, led by Executive Director Jim Reilly, has been working diligently to develop a comprehensive FIS program that aligns with our athletes' needs and the foundation's long-term goals.

The committee has been meeting regularly, and we are excited to share that we are close to introducing our initial FIS program for the 2024/2025 season. These productive meetings have fostered a spirit of collaboration and strategic planning.

Jim Reilly shares his enthusiasm: "Now that we have met a few times to discuss the overall program, both size, and scale, we can see a plan ahead that is implemented in three phases to ensure we don't bite off too much in our first year. The FIS committees have submitted a proposal to the KSEF Board, and we are preparing to discuss and vote on the proposal as soon as July 15."

Key Recommendations from the FIS Committee Meeting on April 27, 2024:

  • Leadership and Management: Establish a dedicated Director/Manager and coaching team for the FIS program.

  • Season Training and Race Schedule: Implement a structured training plan with options in North America, South America, Europe, and New Zealand.

  • Costs and Funding: Develop a hybrid funding model, including corporate sponsorships and tuition increases to cover travel and training expenses.

  • Athlete Pool: Initially, 10 athletes were eligible, but recent updates suggest only two may participate.

  • Program Options: Explore collaboration with other regional teams and consider building a South Tahoe Regional FIS team.

The KSEF Board has thoroughly reviewed the minutes and recommendations from the FIS Committee’s April 27th meeting. While we are enthusiastic about the potential of launching a FIS program, we have some concerns about the feasibility of going all out in the first year. Our current analysis suggests that a phased approach might be more sustainable, allowing us to build the program gradually and ensure its success.

Key Concerns:

  1. Program Viability and Scale: Initially, we estimated ten athletes would qualify for the FIS program. However, recent updates indicate that only two may wish to participate. This significant reduction impacts our planning and financial projections.

  2. Financial Sustainability: The proposed budget for coaching salaries, transportation, and insurance is substantial. Ensuring the FIS arm is self-funded and does not strain our core KSEF resources is paramount.

  3. Logistics and Management: Housing for coaches, transportation logistics, and liability insurance are critical issues that need addressing. We must ensure that all aspects of the program are covered without imposing undue financial or operational strain on KSEF.

  4. Chaperone Responsibilities: Another concern is ensuring the safety and supervision of our athletes during away races. Parents will need to be actively involved as chaperones to mitigate liability issues.

As President of the Board, “I have seen firsthand the challenges and opportunities of introducing an FIS program. Years ago, during my first term with the Board, we faced significant challenges due to a similar initiative. As a Board, we are committed to supporting an FIS program for our athletes, but we must ensure that it is well-planned, financially viable, and aligned with our long-term goals.”

We are genuinely excited about the future and the potential to create a robust FIS program at KSEF. Your recommendations provide a strong foundation, and with thoughtful planning and collaboration, we are optimistic about launching a successful program in the 2024/2025 season. Together, we can build a brighter future for our athletes and the entire KSEF community.

Thank you once again for your hard work and dedication. We look forward to discussing the recommendations and working together to make the FIS program a reality.

Stay tuned for more updates as we approach the new season. We appreciate your continued support and enthusiasm as we embark on this exciting journey. Let's make the 2024/2025 season unforgettable!
