The Kirkwood Ski Education Foundation (KSEF), a certified California 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, seeks a knowledgeable and detail-oriented individual to join our Board of Directors as Treasurer. This volunteer role is critical in overseeing financial health, compliance, transparency, and accountability, directly supporting our mission of fostering youth alpine ski racing programs and community engagement at Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

Position Overview

Position: Treasurer, Board of Directors
Type: Volunteer
Term: Three-year staggered term
Time Commitment: 10–15 hours per month, including attendance at 1–2 board meetings per month or as needed
Location: Remote with occasional onsite meetings at Kirkwood Mountain Resort, CA

Core Responsibilities

Financial Oversight:

• Monitor the organization's financial condition and ensure fiscal responsibility.
• Regularly review financial statements, identifying issues, opportunities, and areas needing attention.

Budget Management:

• Assist in preparing, reviewing, and approving the annual budget.
• Provide ongoing budget oversight, comparing actual financial performance against the approved budget and reporting variances.

Financial Reporting:

• Present clear and concise financial reports at board meetings.
• Ensure all board members have access to financial documents and understand the nonprofit's financial position.

Compliance and Regulatory Requirements:

• Ensure timely and accurate filing of annual IRS Form 990 and other required financial statements or forms.
• Oversee financial audits or reviews, working with external auditors as necessary.

Internal Controls and Risk Management:

• Establish, review, and strengthen internal financial controls to protect assets and mitigate risks of fraud or mismanagement.
• Ensure financial policies are documented, followed, and periodically reviewed (e.g., expense reimbursement policies, cash handling, check signing authority).

Fundraising and Financial Planning:

• Collaborate closely with fundraising committees to assist in setting realistic financial goals and developing effective strategies.
• Assist in projecting financial sustainability and advise the board on financial risks and opportunities.

Banking and Investments:

• Manage relationships with financial institutions to safeguard the nonprofit's resources.
• Oversee investment strategies aligned with organizational policies, risk tolerance, and ethical guidelines.

Additional Roles:

• Chair or actively participate in finance-related committees (Audit, Investment, Budget).
• Educate board members on financial literacy, ensuring they understand their fiduciary responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Solid financial background in accounting, finance, or business management.
• Knowledge of nonprofit accounting practices and financial reporting.
• Detail-oriented with strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Familiarity with nonprofit tax regulations, compliance, and reporting requirements.
• Grant writing experience and previous nonprofit board experience are highly desirable.
